So this is total BS.. I flippin’ screwed up my wrist.   Oh, but we paddlers all have been there before right?  Well, not quite.  I can’ claim that I screwed up my wrist fighting a gale or crossing a 50 mile channel.. no.. I screwed my wrist up on dry land.. with a mouse in my hand.   No kidding!  Move 125 websites to a new server in just a couple of weeks and by the end.. It’s carpal-tunnel time in River City!  I took a couple of days off and was feeling like the worst was past.. That was until I went paddling the other day.  All I can say is that I have a host of favorite colorful metaphors and I used every one of them loading my kayak back on to the roof of the Jeep.  It’s a good thing we get younger every year or I’d really be really uptight!

  • Oh dear. That is very painful in more ways than one. I can relate.

I did that too with too many mouse clicks and had the carpal tunnel surgery in my right wrist years ago. But the pain from the inflamed nerves can travel up to your elbow and shoulder soon enough if you don’t rest it long enough and let the inflammation cool down and then never repeat what caused it. SOS MEDS!

Here’s where you can maybe make good use of an awesome tandem kayak with a strong paddler behind to escort you around while you take pics and relax and let others load your gear? The paddling community is the most generous I have ever met.

I would love to get you into Paddle to Yoga one day! If you can stand the initial feelings of “I really hate this stuff (I mean doing the yoga poses and breathing exercises). And wondering, “Is this doin’ me any good!” Yep! But it takes a while for it to convince you.

When it rains it pours. I hope things cheer up for you soon. It is one weary spring up here in Canada. I’m ready to say, “Screw it. I’m buying a dry suit and paddling anyway!”

    Best wishes from Canada.

You know any strong paddlers? :) Yeah, you see many years of guitar.. followed by typing.. followed by paddling.. Oh well I’d rather suffer the pain of doing stuff, then the pain of not doing stuff in the long run.. I’m sure it will ease down in a week or two.. I’ve just got to be conscious of what I’m doing..

I actually used to do do yoga years back. You’re right that it takes time for it to work.. Probably not a bad habit to get into again.. On the other hand, I’m not one to get into new grooves on my own very easily.. I usually need someone around to stick me in the ribs now and again..;)

It’s been raining and storming on and off here today.. but It’s warm and feels summery out. As for you.. Yep, get a drysuit.. you should never have a good reason NOT to paddle. LOL!

I feel your pain! I mean I really do…I have those same issues. Here’s my recommendations. First, learn to mouse with your off-hand. It can give your dominant hand a break for all but the most delicate of tasks. Second, use a tablet for email and other tasks to give your hand another way to interface with the computer. Third, consider switching to Greenland-style paddling as it is very balanced (no grip/slip hand) and easy on the joints. Good luck!

  • Good advice from Mark! I learned to mouse with my left hand (everyone thinks I’m left-handed) but I have never learned to brush my teeth with that hand!

It never ceases to amaze me how many guy paddlers actually do or did yoga. I’d love to see you strike a pose out there on the water. Paddle to a spot, get out of boat, strike a pose or two in the outdoors. It’s not the same as indoor studio yoga. Wow, would that ever be a cool post from Derrick! What poses would you choose? I’m looking for more Paddle to Yoga converts. It’s a movement.

If I buy a drysuit, I’ll need to paddle with people who are good with zippers!

Cheers from Canada! Ever paddle up here?
