And they were all impressed with your Halston dress
And the people that you knew at Elaine’s
And the story of your latest success
You kept ‘em so entertained

So this morning I sit here drinking Starbucks coffee from a mug with a fancy Venetian theme. Now that would be all fine and dandy if not for the fact that I also realized that the dark roasted Starbucks coffee in the bag bears an amazing resemblance to that dark loam you get your worms in for fishing.

Well I’ve had dreams enough for one
And I’ve got love enough for three
I have my hopes to comfort me
I got my new horizons out to sea

I first met Bryan Smith a few years back in Bodega Bay, California when he was teaching at the BCU Symposium there. He among many other coaches that fall, changed my whole perspective of sea kayaking and of coaching. Their love of the sport was so infectious that addiction to kayaking just seemed like a normal part of the progression. From those guys I first leaned that fun & inspiration were just as important to coaching as teaching braces. These days Brian has turned to filmaking to spread the kayak gospel. He has been busy over the last few months promoting his new film, Pacific Horizons and will be attending Canoecopia here in Wisconsin in just eleven days. I asked Brian if he’d do a little interview for us as a warm up. So, here we go. . . .

If you ask me, the star of Pacific Horizons, the new DVD from Bryan Smith, is Paul Kuthe who is my choice for the Foam Cowboy award, 2007! (if there were such a thing).

Yeah well, when I was taking French 101 in High school I aways thought, “What will I ever use this for??”. Little did I know that had I paid more attention I could have better understood Steve Martin’s jokes and of course been able to read Charles’s website. Wait, does that say Pacific Horizons?? Apparently the phrase, “Rock On!” is the same in any language! If by chance you speak French you might enjoy this website at www.soireesaventures.com.

Hey kid, rock and roll
Rock on, ooh, my soul
Hey kid, boogey too, did ya?

I’m not sure if sitting her under a dim yellow lamp and listening to Mendelssohn is the perfect atmosphere to write about this new DVD. One thing is sure, this gray November weather does make me want to watch it.
Pacific Horizons, is a new DVD from west coat kayaker and filmmaker Bryan Smith. It’s his first foray into the kayaking DVD market and as far as I can tell, the first shot in HighDef. His film takes us on a journey around the northwest coast of the United States and includes segments such as; Dubsides “Commando Kayaking”, The Bunsby Islands with the folks at Body Boat Blade, Keirron Tastagh & Jeff Norvill’s 14 day circumnavigation of Vancouver, The Columbia River Gorge, exciting tidal race play, beautiful Skooks footage and much more.

How is it I never see
The waves that bring me her words to me
for though unseen they drift around
they catch my breath and knock me down

I’m sure you guys remember Bryan Smith. We got to watch him do some amazing stuff in the Skooks in This Is the Sea II. He’s an impressive paddler, and today we’ll see he’s also an impressive film maker! Bryan has posted the trailer for
his new DVD, “Pacific Horizons” and it looks flippin fantasic! The film features segments on Dubside, Quadra Island Tidal Races, Skookumchuck Narrows, Keirron Tastagh and Jeff Norville’s 14 day Circumnavigation of Vancouver Island, San Juan Islands, The Oregon Coast, Columbia River Gorge, Remote West Coast Vancouver Island Locations, Queen Charlotte Islands, and much more.
Here’s this from Bryan:
“I started filming Pacific Horizons out of the passion I have for sea kayaking here in the Northwest. With the outer coast, protected inland waters, tidal races, wildlife, and people it seemed like a natural starting point for my first full length sea kayaking film. I set my goals really high right from the start and wanted to focus on one geographic area, giving the film a solid theme that carried through every segment. The film has been shot in High Definition and I have been super excited on the overall quality of the images. I’ve also concentrated on capturing the spirit of the paddlers as well and tried hard to bring out the humor and personalities that make the sport of sea kayaking so much fun.”

A metaphor is a glorious thing,
A diamond ring,
The first day of summer
A metaphor is a breath of fresh air,
A turn-on,
An aphrodisiac
