Lumix Crash Test

So, I’ve got to share this story with you. The other day I was just packing up after my regular paddle around the local lake. I was going through my habitual process of putting away my gear, changing clothes and what-have-you when a woman came walking around my Jeep and started asking me questions. She had traveled around the US and had just arrived for 10 days here in the Baraboo Hills. She had all sorts of questions about trails, paddling, biking, where to find vegan food and about a hundred more questions. In the distraction, I got out of my routine. I left my Lumix DMC-Ts3 sitting on the back of my jeep. Continue reading
Lumix DMC-TS3 At First Blush

This wild rose shot is one of the first shots I took with my new Panasonic Lumix TS3. I just set the camera on “normal” mode (as soon as I figured out where to do that!) and went out the door. The shot is about as un-edited as possible. It’s cropped and re-sized for the blog, otherwise it’s just as it came out of the camera. As paddlers our first concern is often how “waterproof” a new camera is, but what’s the point if they don’t take decent pictures? I took the camera to my favorite haunts and shot a lot of images that I’ve shot before. Same subjects, same spots, same cloudy weather. I can easily find comparable shots I’ve taken with my digital SLRs, various compacts and even old Waterproof Optios. At first blush, I’m pretty content. Continue reading
WMCKA Picture Day!

I have two photo galleries for you today.. The first gallery is a variety of pictures from the 2011 WMCKA symposium as well as a few from the drive over and back. As you know, most of my galleries tend to wander all over the place just to catch the atmosphere. Camp Pendaloun certainly has atmosphere! Continue reading
Scary Bunnies
“Oh, great! Any more and we’ll be able to do a production of bloody Watership Down!”
People have said I can find the dark side of anything.. Well, judging from these strange Easter bunny costumes from a 1996 episode of “The Vicar of Dibley”, I’m not the only one. These are some scary bunnies! And speaking of finding the dark side, you’d never guess what I came across while out hiking on the Ice Age Trails yesterday.. an Easter basket!! Now what could be dark about an Easter basket? Continue reading
Best Waterproof Camera Today?

Of course this is junk! (water getting in…) Don’t get me started on Pentax… No, we’ve moved on but it’s been a couple of years since I’ve bought a new waterproof compact camera and I could use your advice. What’s working for you these days? Cannon? Fuji? Lumix? Olympus? Remember what we’re shootin’ for here. Fits in a PFD pocket, easy to manage with one hand, handles light well and can produce sharp images on lumpy water.. What say you experts?
Home & Dry

It was almost 8pm when we heard the sound of our driveway gravel snapping and popping under our wheels after almost 8 hours on the road from Grand Marais. This morning will be spent clearing out the gear, garbage and oder that can collect in your automobile after a few days at a sea kayaking symposium. So for the moment let me just share some pictures from the 2010 Great Lakes Sea Kayaking Symposium & the wonderful landscapes & seascapes of the Pictured Rocks National Lake Shore region. Pentax Optio – (insert curse here)

Is something wrong, she said – Well of course there is
You’re still alive, she said – Oh, and do I deserve to be
Is that the question?
pearl jam
Is not the Optio by Pentax the biggest shaft ever put to a paddlers hide? I’m on my 3rd. The W60 is the first one that actually stayed working for more than one season. Working, just long enough for the lens to do it’s impersonation of the record from Monty Python’s Hungarian phrasebook sketch. “I will not buy this camera, It is scratched.” Of course it is. There’s no freaking lens cap! Great plan for a camera that’s supposed to put up with what outdoor folks can throw at it.. Seems obvious doesn’t it? (insert curse here) Continue reading
