Upper Wisconsin Dells

The trick to paddling the in the Wisconsin Dells is to choose the spring or fall when the water is not filled with tour boats, jet boats, and blind drunk tourists. If you can avoid the seasonal madness you’re in for something special. Tomorrow I’ll tell you more about the Riverfest event we attended on Saturday, for now though let me share a gallery of paddling photos from the upper Dells section of the Wisconsin River. I’ve also added a Google Map of this section of the Wisconsin River.
a case for either

I just thought I’d share with you a picture of some of the camera cases I have compared to the little waterproof cameras. You can quickly see why we want a small waterproof camera. These cases are a real pain in the butt to use. The problem for kayakers is not that we want to take pictures under water. No, that would be easy. The problem is that we exist in both realms. That of air and water. We are not so much choosing gear that is best designed for our sport as we are choosing with which gear we can simply make do.
delete the ghosts, keep the empties

And my traveling companions
Are ghosts and empty sockets
I’m looking at ghosts and empties
But I’ve reason to believe
We all will be received

The say that to some the sea is like a lover. Well, around here the water has pretty much turned into an Ice Queen. At least when it comes to the water, you’re free to find yourself another distraction until she decides to warm up again. Yikes!
I’m sure it doesn’t help my winter mood that I’ve decided to take these recent quiet days to try to sort through the thousands of photographs I’ve collected over the last 5 years or so.
december fog

The rowan, the oak and the holly tree
are the charges left for you to groom.
Each blade of grass whispers Jack-In-The-Green.
Oh Jack, please help me through my winter’s night.
And we are the berries on the holly tree.
Oh, the mistlethrush is coming.
Jack, put out the light.

There are many reasons to love sudden blasts of warm weather in the heart of winter. Not only is it simply the spring feel of the moist air but for camera junkies it’s also that amazing fog that really makes you giddy. Today’s nearly 50F temperatures created a thick fog that diffused the light and filled the forests to create a Narnia-esque dreamscape where any place you pointed the camera seemed filled with mystery.
Herb for my whine

Dont worry about a thing,
cause every little thing gonna be all right.
Singin: dont worry about a thing,
cause every little thing gonna be all right!

God bless you merry gentle men and creators of the Optio. I figured I’d get that out of the way before I once again went on a short rant about the quality of the Pentax Optio. This time, the W60.

Be A Great Photographer

South Stack, Wales
Yeah, that title would catch my eye too. For a couple reasons. First, I’m always wondering if there is some little tip I can pull quickly from an article or because nobody in their right mind should think they’re a great photographer. In the end there are certainly a few things you can do to learn to get better pictures but as Tim Shuff at Adventure Kayak pointed out in his last article, most of all you just have to be there.
