The Don Ho Solution

Now here’s a bit of interesting news.  Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Makers of great big ships among other things.) has come up with this cool, efficient, and dare I say, “fun” way to cut up to 25 percent of CO2 emissions from large cargo carriers.  Heck, they’ll even go a bit faster as well!  The big idea?  Blowing bubbles!

Frog Bay Tribal National Park

The Red Cliff Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa are creating a nearly 90 acre Tribal National Park on the northern tip of Wisconsin with a quarter-mile beach looking out on to the Apostle Islands. Kayakers & hikers alike will of course be celebrating access to a new section of shoreline, of course they may need to wait a while.  According to reports the park will not open to the public until August of 2012 at the very earliest.  Still, good news all around.

Netarts Bay Incident

I’m certainly not going to wade into the second guessing game that goes on with these sorts of incidents, but if you’re a sea kayaker or coach it would be worth your while to read this incident report about the events of October 4th in Netarts Bay off the coast of Oregon. Personally, I only have two rather general impressions; The first is that I feel for the author of the report, I totally hear where he’s coming from.  Secondly, the sea is very big and we are very small.  Nothing brings that closer to home than when we’re trying to solve a scary problem out there.

Boatloads of Discontent

Wisconsin, like in so many other places around the country and around the world, is facing an abrupt change in how we how we treat others and our environment, all in the name of money as usual.  At the moment, those who choose individualism and corporate profit are in charge.  The folks interested in a more social view, workers rights, and concern for the environment are finding themselves left adrift and carrying signs..  Things will change.  Everything is cyclical.  What bothers me personally are the folks who live on the fringe who really have no voice and will simply suffer even more while the rest of us spin in a holding pattern of debate.  Yesterday at our local state park, our freshly minted Governor showed up to take part in the 100 year celebration.  It was clear pretty quickly that the majority of the people attending the event were not fans, but were there to protest.. Even on the water…  Continue reading

15 kayakers missing in Greenland, Now Found

A shot of the West Greenland Fjords I took a couple years ago during a fly over..

Reports were going out this morning of 15 kayakers that became lost in a storm along the coast of Eastern Greenland today.  About an hour ago reports came through that they have been all found safe and sound.  Greenland is a very popular destination for paddlers and adventurers for exactly the same reason it can be so dangerous.. It’s big, cold, storms can come out of nowhere, and often help is just not all that swift in coming.  Obviously everyone in the paddling community will be happy to hear every one came out of this one ok!

Dead Rising 2

And now for something completely different – A man with chainsaws taped to his kayak paddle.  I think I’ve seen this before somewhere.. Maybe it was one of those fun evening events at the Door County Sea Kayak Symposium!  (In my head, the voice of Robin Williams says, “Oh, your gonna burn for that one.”) Actually this illustration came from a recent Gameinformer review of Dead Rising 2.  Dead Rising has a bit of a reputation for coming up with new ways to kill zombies.  This is certainly a unique one.  I’m not sure what the “DD” is, but they sure look like Lendals to me!

This Is Media

Morning all.  Today we’ve got a bit of exciting news and I’m also looking for your thoughts.  First of all my friend Justine Curgenven; filmmaker, adventurer and occasional country chef has just released the preview of her latest DVD called, This  Is Canoeing!  (10,000 canoeists stand up and shout, “IT’S ABOUT FRIGGIN’ TIME!) What’s more, we’ve also.. (I can say “we” for this part…) updated her website at www.CackleTV.com..  Ok, now for the discussion bit…

I expect Justine’s new DVD to sell like mad.  She’s an amazing filmmaker of course, but what really shines through is her personality which simply soaks through every frame.  Personally, I believe she could make a documentary on lake sludge and I’m sure it would still exude excitement and fun.  It’s just what happens when she gets into something and that’s why I’ve been totally in her court for more years than I care to count now. :)

Now here’s the discussion bit.. How are we all doing with multi-media these days?  Are we video’d out and so far buried in the Youtube glut that we no longer value professional work?  Are we less apt to pay for something we perceive we can get for free elsewhere? Maybe it’s oppositely true that we’re more apt to buy something because all the free junk makes us well aware of the good stuff? Maybe there is still so few of us who live online, that we won’t effect the outcome either way..  What are your thoughts on the state of media today?

Oh, and by the way.. you can pre-order Justine’s new DVD right here on her brand new website… Did I mention that?
