Hello. Welcome to the first “official” day of winter, and to everybody’s favorite game show, GLOVES THAT SUCK! (Cheers! Clapping!) Yes, Yes.. Alright, Thank you!! Yes, this is GLOVES THAT SUCK and today we’ll be introducing you to these grey beauties.. yes they’re thick, they’re restrictive, and what’s more, they will let your finger tips get nice and wet. Now we all know what happens when you restrict movement, restrict blood flow, and keep your fingers wet on a cold winter day don’t we!? That’s right.. Cold burning fingers!! Maybe even a bit of the ole’ frostbite!! You know what we say, when we get gloves that don’t keep our hands warm don’t we? Everybody now.. THESE GLOVES SUCK! Tune in next time when we talk to a nice pair of cotton mittens who make their home in Brixton, London, UK… They really, really SUC… Well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves…
Waterline

It’s that time of year. You know, the time of year when you finally get to catch up on all the video games you bought but never played, and dig in to all those old episodes of Ghost Adventures.. Frankly, I love Ghost Adventures. This show has single-handily proved to me that ghosts don’t exist and what’s more, it’s educational… What better program could you ask for to teach your child all about critical thinking? Yeah, well.. Between the ”how-did-you-get-that?” EVPs and that ghostly Ovilus language database thingy… Continue reading
Counting Geese

It’s a good thing that I only have a couple more days left on my 100 mile paddle at Devil’s Lake State Park, the amount of open water on the lake is shrinking each day. For the moment, the massive number of Canada geese hanging out at the park seem happy with the expanding ice. Geese are commonplace around here of course, and it’s not hard to find someone who hates them for the noise they make and the messes they leave behind. Still, to my mind, anytime we can witness such large numbers of animals in the wild is really a gift. We’ve been there before; bison, passenger pigeons, cranes, just to name a few. It’s just too easy to deem animals as pests and let the hunt begin.. Honestly, I could never imagine humans wiping out Canada geese.. I mean… Seriously?? But history tell us that we should never be too sure of ourselves…
The Gift That Keeps Them Living…

Ok, so I took this idea from a paddleshop’s Facebook adver-post (My new word of the day), but I can’t deny a good idea. Each year paddle bloggers write about great holiday gift ideas and inevitably that means gear, but here’s a better idea.. give a lesson.
It’s natural (and wise) to feel a little apprehension when your friend or family member decides to take up kayaking as a new hobby. It’s not a particularly dangerous sport, but when things do go bad, it almost always involves folks who are very inexperienced. Continue reading

Did you know that Canoecopia tickets are already available for 2012? Ticket prices went up for 2012, but if you get on your horse you can save a bit by purchasing yours online right away. I’m assuming you already know that Canoecopia is the countries largest paddle sports expo and is held each year in Madison, Wisconsin. This year’s dates are March 9th – 11th. I’ll see you there.. somewhere…
Meanwhile 45 miles to the north of Madison, I spend my Thanksgiving day paddling around Devil’s Lake… Surprise, Surprise!! That marked day 27 leaving me only 7 days to go to hit my 100 mile goal. Now I’m actually dragging my heels to get my last day in as near to the end of the year as possible. I think it would be sweet to wrap up on New Year’s eve day… It’s all up to old man winter at this point. I posted a small gallery of pics from Thanksgiving day over on Flickr. (Click Here) Nice moody day, Canada Geese, Bald Eagle… great day to be on the water!

I’m still out there… somewhere, paddling. You know what they say, if you’re out doing it, you’re too busy to be sitting home writing about it! Yeah, well, on a microscopic level that’s true. The time I used to devote to blogging has been taken up in the mornings by paddling or hiking. I just haven’t been of a mind to write recently. If you blog long enough, you realize that the muse comes and goes. Right now, I’m mostly inspired to be outdoors, doing. The picture above is from yesterday morning’s circuit around the lake. It was a cold, windy morning filled with ice, waterfowl and cat’s paws. Continue reading
Another day…

Only 10 days left and I’ll finally have my 100 miles down. Good thing too because winter is nipping right at my tail. I posted the story of yesterday’s snowy paddle, along with a 3 minute video clip over at DevilsLakeWisconsin.com. Here’s the link.
