When seeking out Kayak instruction it is a good idea choose ACA or BCU certified instructors or schools. These folks normally will be up to date with the latest teaching concepts and safety procedures. Below are just a few coaches in Wisconsin that offer private lessons
- Derrick Mayoleth (Me) – Located in Baraboo, Wisconsin.
Private instruction is perfect for those not comfortable in large classes or those looking for more personal attention. I am happy to work one-on-one or with couples. I can customize the class around your needs as well as cover safety issues, proper clothing and gear, boat handling skills, rescue & towing techniques. I can also work with you on your rolling techniques as well. Both Euro and traditional styles.Classes will be taught in a calm environment at beautiful Devils Lake State Park near Baraboo. I am an ACA certified instructor, and a passed a BCU 4 star assessment. (sea). I have paddled Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, & both coasts in conditions from calm and sunny to down-right scary. As you know, we are always learning and when I am not able to get out to the “big water” you will find me 3 to 5 days a week (when the water’s not frozen) working on my own skills at Devil’s Lake. – See you there!

Patient, open, and engaging I bring my love for paddling and teaching to every class. I believe students learn best when they are engaged and motivated, therefore classes are designed to be fun, experiential, and pack in lots of learning. The positive feedback and smiling faces of previous students keeps me excited about teaching paddling. I am certified by the American Canoe Association as a Coastal Sea Kayak Instructor and Moving Water Canoe Instructor. I also hold certifications as a Lifeguard and Wilderness First Responder. I earned a master’s degree in Outdoor Education in 2001 and have been teaching and leading wilderness trips since 1995. I have paddled in many places including the Florida Everglades and Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands. I continue to develop my own skills through trips and workshops with top instructors. I teach private and group lessons and I am willing to travel. You can contact me at http://climerconsulting.com/contact.html.

If you are looking for instruction in sea kayaking, whether it be an “introduction to” or more advanced; or, navigation; or, rescues and towing, I can provide all such instructional needs. I am certified by the British Canoe Union (BCU) as a Coach 2; and, I am certified by the American Canoe Association (ACA) as an Open Water Sea Kayak Instructor. I have taken the BCU 5 Star proficiency class. I have sea kayak touring experience having paddled the entire coast of Georgia, as well as paddling in the Apostle Islands. I maintain current certifications in CPR and Wilderness First Aid. Additionally, I’ve led groups in winter camping (snowshoes and cross country skis), as well as sea kayaking groups in the Apostle Islands. I have taken the Wilderness First Responder course, and maintained my certification for six years, but I am not currently certified as a “WFR.” I am also actively involved in promoting sea kayaking, and as part of this I do several free “clinics”. I delight in introducing people to the world of kayaking and seeing students “get it”. I am a two-star ACA certified seakayak instructor and have a strong interest in traditional boats and paddles. I come from a 35 year background of sailing large boats on Lake Michigan and have experience navigating. I am also a photographer and have taught Judo for decades (Blackbelt). I stress strong, basic fundamentals including strokes, escapes, self rescues and braces as well as helping the new paddler develop a “personal ritual” to be sure they always have the proper equipment properly stowed before going on the water. Safety is my primary goal, closely followed by having fun. Email For Info
