Bass Boats
There’s no earthly way of knowing
Which direction we are going
There’s no knowing where we’re rowing
Or which way the river’s flowing
- it’s a wonka thing..
Not sure why, but Australia has been on my mind this morning. I suppose it’s mostly because I’ve been following Geoff Murray along with Greg Simpson, Mark Broadley and the “Mysterious 3″ as they explore the Bass Strait. Funny thing, the Bass Strait; It’s actually a challenging bit of ocean between Tasmania and Australia named after a guy named George, but if you told someone from around here that you were going, they’d probably suggest a Ranger Comanche and your favorite spinner! Worlds apart… The Bass Strait trip blog is worth following by the way. Any blog that can fit the words, “trousers”, “bumpy” and “interesting” in the same post is well worth the read! Continue reading

It’s been a long time coming, but I can’t say there was much doubt. Freya Hoffmeister of Germany completed her sea kayak circumnavigation of Australia!! Amazing! Wonderful! Well done! Continue reading
the price of fame

Want a horse, i want a sheep,
I wanna get me a good night’s sleep,
Livin’ in a home in the heart of the country.

Freya Hoffmeister has found that she needs to put a delay on some public information about her trip just to help her retain a bit of privacy during her expedition. It’s not hard to imagine why “all live, all the time” could create problems. Well, for Freya anyway. I, like most paddlers I dare say, could post 24 hour exact GPS coordinates and still not be interupped by the passing of a tumble weed . . Fame of course is a fleeting thing and you should enjoy it when you’re in the eye of the bubble. . . on the other hand sometimes you just need some sleep. ( I think Madeline Kahn sang something about that once. . .)
