Highway 41

A lot of things can cross your mind when you’re sitting on a the corner of hwy 67 and 41 in Trenary, Michigan on your way to Escanaba any many miles beyond ’til home. Thoughts like, “Where the hell am I?” for one. As soon as we left Grand Marais and the cool grip of Lake Superior, the air became hot, humid and oppressive. Standing beside the car while my pup took care of business, I was filled with many wandering thoughts about the past 10 days, 2 symposiums, 4 campgrounds, trips, classes, gear, mosquitos, boats, blogging and why I couldn’t seem to drink enough water. I’ve got a bunch of thoughts, pictures and more to share. Today though, I think I’m going to just find some shade and sip a margarita.. oh, and maybe go rolling.. We’ll talk soon.. Oh, did I mention that gas station with all the bear hides? No? Well, that’ll have to wait.. It’s just too bloody hot to type at the moment..
Arrived!

I popped out of the tent early this morning to watch the sun rise one last time over Lake Michigan before we drove the rest of the way across the UP up to Grand Marais for the sea kayak symposium on the shore of Lake Superior. As with most sunrises, I wasn’t disappointed. Watching a sunrise is a sure sign you survived to live another day. If you get to watch the sun rise over open water.. It’s probably going to be a great day. Continue reading
Home & Dry

It was almost 8pm when we heard the sound of our driveway gravel snapping and popping under our wheels after almost 8 hours on the road from Grand Marais. This morning will be spent clearing out the gear, garbage and oder that can collect in your automobile after a few days at a sea kayaking symposium. So for the moment let me just share some pictures from the 2010 Great Lakes Sea Kayaking Symposium & the wonderful landscapes & seascapes of the Pictured Rocks National Lake Shore region. Sunset On Grand Marais

Amazing weather here in Grand Marais on the shores of Lake Superior has made for a wonderful first day. The picture above is of Gryphon (age 9) out by the GM lighthouse for the last night’s sunset paddle. He and one other young person joined the group. Continue reading
Lightning, It’s so “Very”!

I was caught in the suction
By a face like a truncheon
I was down upon one knee
Stroking her vanity – e. costello
We’re back from the symposium at Door County here in Wisconsin. We’ve only got a couple days of “down time” before we head back up to Grand Marais, MI for the Great Lakes Sea Kayak Symposium. For the moment let me just share a few pictures of the best kayak art work I saw at Door. This Valley Anas Acuta was at it’s base black or very, very, very dark blue with lots of purple and red glitter. Lightning stripes were inlaid into the gelcoat. I could be a fussy pain in the bum and critique the detailing but all in all this is a darn pretty boat! Continue reading
