Summer? That must mean product testing season is here again! Well, you know how it goes around here... Like you, it seems when I've finally solved all my clothing & gear problems there's always something that needs to be replaced or something that just didn't work out. Sometimes, I just trip into trying out new products. Take these Sabino Trail™ Mid GTXs by Montrail for instance...
Is not the Optio by Pentax the biggest shaft ever put to a paddlers hide? I'm on my 3rd. The W60 is the first one that actually stayed working for more than one season. Working, just long enough for the lens to do it's impersonation of the record from Monty Python's Hungarian phrasebook sketch. "I will not by this camera, It is scratched." Of course it is. There's no freaking lens cap!
Occasionally there are features that come along that truly do change our lives or make things more convenient. Advances with Tow Systems, PFDs, & clothing come to mind. More often than not though, "hot new features" are really just glitter (not that I don't love glitter!!) that distract us from asking the simple questions like, "Does this thing actually work?".
The problem for kayakers is not that we want to take pictures under water. No, that would be easy. The problem is that we exist in both realms. That of air and water. We are not so much choosing gear that is best designed for our sport as we are choosing with which gear we can simply make do.
God bless you merry gentle men and creators of the Optio. I figured I'd get that out of the way before I once again went on a short rant about the quality of the Pentax Optio. This time, the W60.
