P&H Kayaks

I Can’t Review The Delphin

Modesty, propriety can lead to notoriety
You could end up as the only one
Gentleness, sobriety are rare in this society
At night a candle’s brighter than the sun – sting

I can’t review P&H Sea Kayaks new Delphin.  Yeah, I did get time to paddle one this summer when I was teaching in Michigan.  Thing is, the Delphin is purpose-built. It’s a surfer. In any other conditions it simply will not be at it’s finest. Funny thing though, all the hype around the Delphin has a lot of folks who’ll never actually go surfing salivating, regardless of how it may or may not paddle on flat water.  If nothing else, it does show that P&H Sea Kayaks is simply destroying their competitors when it comes to marketing their products. Hey, somebody should say it.  In the last couple of years P&H has been dusting everyone in their wake. When you’re talking big waves, P&H is riding it and at the moment, from the cockpit of the Delphin.   Continue reading

philosophical epiphany?

“When I grow up…. I’m gonna kick his a**!”

The day after Canoecopia is a bit of a hangover day.  It takes time to assess the weekend and figure out what happened and what it all meant.  (If anything…)  I’m sure there was a philosophical epiphany hidden in the weekend  somewhere if you look hard enough. In fact, maybe the picture above says it all.  I mean, in the big picture this is what it’s all about isn’t it?  We’ll talk about that, share some news, look at some kit, randomly opine and more in the coming days. For the moment I simply posted about 90 photos from Canoecopia 2011 over on my Flickr with little to no narrative.  Heck, I’m only on the day’s second pot of coffee…

P&H Kayaks has a cool new kayak customizer that let’s you create the P&H kayak of your dreams.. That is of course, IF P&H is the kayak of your dreams. :)    As you can see above, I’m still fantasizing about a very low volume white and grey beast myself. :)   Now we’ve all seen color changers and customizers of one sort or another over the last few years, but I have to say, P&H has done a pretty decent job.  You can select any boat in their fleet, even the plastic versions, then work your way through every available option along a step-by-step process.  There are a LOT of options. Summer?  That must mean product testing season is here again!  Well, you know how it goes around here… Like you, it seems when I’ve finally solved all my clothing & gear problems there’s always something that needs to be replaced or something that just didn’t work out.  Sometimes, I just trip into trying out new products.  Take these Sabino Trail™ Mid GTXs by Montrail for instance…

Delphin Spy Shots

Check it out!  Here’s some more of those secret shots of the rumored “Delphin” being tested at the P&H Kayak’s secret ocean proving grounds.  Our spy on the inside (cough, cough, Brian Day, cough) had this to say about the new craft; “From what I saw of the workshop images (and you can see some of this in the action photos) the stern has been reworked to be a bit more plumb that in the first proto(type). Longer waterline length for more speed. The chines have been reworked, too. Continue reading

Teaser

Happy Monday.  It was everything I could do this morning to get to this point.  My son was sick last Friday.. and it was my turn to come down with it (or wake up to it) in the middle of the night.  Call it renewed dedication of just abject silliness, but I’m vertical just long enough to give you this first X-Boat teaser image.  In the next day or so, when I can keep food down.. I’ll tell you,  and show you more.  Until then, aren’t X boats supposed to be white with little reflective dots all over them?  Ok, back to bed.

X-Boat – P&H Cetus MV

CetusMV1

The P&H Cetus comes in standard &  low volume versions.  Soon it will be available in a mid-size as well. The Cetus MV project is aimed at folks in the 160-220 lb range.  Yeah, that is sort of the average guy size range.  It’s certainly true that the original Cetus (see “original coke”, & “original or extra crispy”)  is just fine for most average sized paddlers but for some the MV will be a bit more tuned in.  You can’t complain about having options.  As coaches we’re always on about boat fit, and a mid-size version will provide a better fitting Cetus for many paddlers.  For some this will mean better, easier and more precise boat control than they would have had without the MV version.  Personally I see lots of advantages to smaller boats as it is, especially for those of us who are not circumnavigating Africa regularly.  Continue reading
