Project Delphin
Advance glance at the new P&H Delphin to come out sometime around christmas.
Right now the P&H Custom Sea Kayaks new Delphin is a bit of an X-Boat. You have to sneak onto a secret base somewhere in the UK to see one. Well, not really. It feels like it though. Thankfully we have a couple advance shots to share. Now what I want to show you here is the upturned hull. (No skegs in this shot!). The Delphin has a bit of a white water edge for carving in surf and some planing areas as well which should make it a really fun boat. Yet even with the racy hull, the kayak is intended to be a good all around, even “beginners” kayak. We’ll see. Reports are that there will still be modifications. Possibly a change in the rocker and there is that whole skeg thing to think about…
Concrete Moose

don’t know if you noticed, but… your name is on
a lot of quotes in this book, and us crazy humans wrote it,
you should take a look..

Talk of double skegs and the sudden appearance of a concrete moose are certainly signs of the end times wherever you may live. Here in the great lakes region we are certainly racing down a steep path to the apocalypse.. Or maybe it’s just the arrival of autumn. Winter after all, IS the apocalypse to more than a handful of northern paddlers. For what it’s worth, I’m collecting evidence that this whole double skeg thing might be bigger than anything Fox or the Weekly World News could have ever imagined.. More on that next week. O.K., so I have to give a shout out to Sharon, Alec and the gang since I was so mean to them recently.. oh, and because they used the word “caguole” in their blog which is at least 45 points in paddle-blogger scrabble. (There’s a bonus for using a real words that sound made up outside of the paddling world) Meanwhile I’m still planning to paddle… Well, by planning I mean loosely considering what I’d need to paddle, down the Lower Wisconsin in the next week or so. It always comes down to where the child will go. Yeah, he could go along of course, but as the song says, “to everything there is a season..”. Sometimes it’s the season to leave little Billy at grandmas.

Just for a change I took my P&H Scorpio down the Wisconsin river yesterday. The Scorpio as you know is the plastic version of P&H’s very cool Cetus. As it happened a couple on the trip had custom ordered 2 Cetus’ from P&H and were excited to be getting them next month. I’ve chatted and paddled with the couple a few times on Rutabaga events so they were happy to tell me all about their new kayaks and where they hoped the new boats would lead. Congratulations!

Each of the last two days I’ve spent time out on the trails around the local park. As much as I might want to deny it the coming death of summer is as clear as the sound of screeching brakes on a highway. The more stressed of the forest trees are beginning to turn, the heat of the sun can’t quite chase the chill out of the mid-day air, the days of rain are beginning to outnumber the days of sun. My Ipod is filling with indie rock once again. It’s that time of year. Oh yeah, and P&H has some new kayaks on the way… I think I have another post about that.. Now let’s see here… what drawer did I put that post in!??
Up the Hatch!

This lovely bit of artwork is what you get when you take a picture of the flooded fifth hatch in your Scorpio. It’s not as if I left the cover off or anything. It simply fills (and I mean fills) with water if I roll the kayak. I don’t believe it’s the kayak. I think it’s the hatch cover. Let me tell you why…
A Leap Once Leapt
I close my eyes, only for a moment, and the moment’s gone
All my dreams, pass before my eyes, a curiosity

It’s that time again. The time where I can’t let another day go by without making one decision or another about my upcoming paddling adventure. This time of course, it’s Scotland. Some of it is easy enough. Buy this, buy that, read this, read that.. take notes! What is different is that with a little experience I’m trying to travel as lightly as I possibly can. Traveling light is harder than you may think given my past BCU training. You come to believe that anything less than everything is irresponsible. I still remember the days when I carried practically 2 weeks worth of gear just to teach a class because that’s what a “hard core” coach did. Or at least I thought so. Continue reading
