A Tale of Two Undergarments

I read recently that one big advantage to having bloggers review gear is that they can look at a product over time, and not just talk about stuff when it’s still all bright and shiny.  So with that in mind I wanted to talk about 2 old shirts.. or two old bit of paddling gear… whatever.  One thing is sure, the fact that I can still wear this stuff after 5 to 10 years speaks a lot to the quality of both.   Continue reading

Yeah, Whatever, But It’s Hadas!

Uh, oh, many, many, many nights go by, / I sit alone at home and I cry over you.
What can I do. / Can’t help myself, ’cause baby, it’s you.

So Reed has a new website!!  Ok, yeah, whatever, but that’s Hadas Feldman on their header!!  See, I know what’s really important!  The picture dates all the way back to 2003, when Hadas, Justine Curgenven  & Alexey Sitnokov paddled their way up the Kamchatka coastline.  The 600 kilometer journey was featured in the first CackleTV, ‘This is the Sea’ DVD.   Ok.. to be honest I’m a total fan of all things Reed and it’s soooo about time they had a new website.  Very cool. Still, seeing Hadas on the top made my day.. almost made me want to buy a Reed Storm Cag… but then I realized.. I’ve already got one!

A bit of wet

I was hungry and I’m hungry still
And now it’s pouring rain
I look o.k. but I’ve been feeling ill

Yesterday we had flash flood warnings in our area, but that didn’t stop us from getting out for a bit of a paddle!  Heavy rains and flooding are getting to be typical for early June in our part of Wisconsin.  It’s defiantly a climate change, but I’d be hard pressed to tell you why.  Whatever the reason it’s been flooding pretty regularly since the ’90s in our area.  The local lake has been so flooded that the state DNR finally incorporated a permanent drain!  Continue reading

Reed Chill Cheater

So our friend Gnarlydog, who by the way has a great post about the new Tahe Marine Greenland Kayak, asked why I didn’t mention Reed kayak skirts in the “Respect” post..  The answer is that I was basically ranting about what NOT to do…  However, between you,  me and the wall I do prefer Reed Chill Cheater skirts over anything I’ve tried.  They are well made, snug and yet easy to remove, they actually do keep the water out and best of all, they are not nearly as hot as a standard neoprene skirt.

Reed Chillcheater

What do you wear
When you need to impress
Just slip
into high heals
And a brand new little black dress

You all know my fixation with Reed gear. Yeah, they make it possible for the secret order of Kayak Ninja to wrap ourselves in back gear. Not that you can’t go with yellow or blue too, but black is my thing. :) The deal with Reed’s gear is that it’s just so warm and comfortable. I’ve had my cags for some time now and am always amazed how they just totally kill the effects of wind when I’m out on the water. Something that really effects me quickly. Even in my drysuit I can feel the breeze sneaking through. Not in my Reeds though. Just great stuff. So it just feels really cool and somehow apt to be able to say I’m sponsored by Reed. Thanks so much to Chris & Jo. They’ve been really kind to me over the last year as it is while I’ve been bugging them about customizations, out of date logos and every other fiddly bit I’ve come to them with. I’d thought it was just as likely they told me “derrick, please don’t shop at our store any longer. . “

Now here’s something I didn’t know. You can order Chillcheater products online here in the States from Second Wind Sports who is the North American distributor. Of course here in the Midwest you can also get Reed stuff from the Geneva Kayak Center near Chicago. But you do have to drive there.

Now we can’t all look as good as Freya Hoffmeister in her Reeds, but we can still look pretty damn cool. :)
