Made in USA

She’s everything you dream about…
but don’t fall in love…
She’s a beauty

There’s nothing special about this Rockpool Kayak. Well, no that’s not right. It’s special to Andrew Green who just recently got his new baby, and certainly is special in that it’s simply another beautiful Alaw Bach. Oh, and what makes it really special is it’s one of the first (I’m told) Rockpool Kayaks made here in the states by Rockpool North America. Continue reading

Shade. . .

Funny how my memory slips
while looking over manuscripts
Of unpublished rhyme
Drinking my vodka and lime

But look around, leaves are brown now
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter

Funny thing.  Just a couple days ago i was talking to a friend in Grand Marais about the Rockpool Alaw Bach.  He took it about for a test paddle and really enjoyed the boat.  The only thing was, he’s quite a bit smaller built than I am and even the Bach was a bit too big.  Well, just for him let me introduce you to the new Isel (pronounced E-sell) from Rockpool Kayaks.  the Isel shares the same dynamic hull as the the Alaw Bach but the deck is 20mm (¾ of an inch) lower which provides a much better fit for smaller paddlers.

The new Isel above was constructed using vacuum infused epoxy and is lighter than a standard layup which will also be available. The kayak in the photo comes in at 20kg, (about 44lbs) however this particular boat is a bit heavy and the hope is that in production they will go down to 19kg.

Man, I need a new rolling boat!

To contact Rockpool just visit their website at www.rockpoolkayaks.com. As I’ve mentioned here before Rockpool is just in the first stages of available in the states.

Now I had to get in the water at least one time before Canoecopia to really get in the swing of things.  After rolling for awhile I thought I’d give a headstand in the Rockpool Alaw Bach another try.

Now if you ever want to try this there are a few things worth knowing. First, if you come crashing backwards over the deck you could get hurt. So I’m not telling you to try it. That said, the lower volume the kayak is the better.  A skin boat sits right near the surface of the water so the paddle laid out across the back right behind the combing works great for stability.  If you have great balance, skip the paddle all together. Good Luck with that!! In a more standard kayak the paddle is way off the surface of the water and is not as much help. You tend to wobble more and need a bit better balance. Of course a small person or child in a big boat will find it much easier. As you’d guess a chubby guy like me also finds it a bit more difficult to get the weight up and centered. Being heavier the kayak also tends to react much more quickly (and decisively) to your movements.  I’d been able to do headstands in my Anas Acuta as it sat really low in the water. I didn’t start having success with my Alaw Bach until this evening.

Now I just have to stay at it for awhile until it becomes as smooth as it was in the Acuta. Thing is after you realize you can do it once, you are much more inspired to stick to it.  Now the only point of the picture below is that I just really love my boat!  :)
