Paddle Love

We all have gear that we love; A favorite paddling jacket or PFD, favorite shoes, camera, GPS, kayak and of course our favorite paddle. Athough not high on the outline, I think it’s fair to say that you can’t fully concentrate on your paddling skills until you’ve got your gear love sorted.  If you’re still wrestling with an uncomfortable drysuit or a javelin-length paddle , you just can’t put 100% focus into your skill development. Sound silly? Well, maybe.. but I’ve watched plenty of paddlers spend most of their time on the water complaining or fiddling with some errant bit of gear while missing everything going on around them. Gear that is too short, too tight, too this or too that.. or simply doesn’t jibe with you’re soul is nothing but distraction. Continue reading

Stickers!

I’ve always enjoyed collecting stickers.  Most of the time people see it at as one of my eleven-hundred and sixteen off-kilter quirks. Sometimes they think I’m just stupid.  Could be. Others think it’s just a clever way to keep the gelcoat from falling off my boat.  It’s probably all of the above.  I can tell you that I was pretty sad when we traded in my old black Jeep for no other reason than about 25 great stickers went with it.  So long great big, backwards Werner sticker, I hope you are happy wherever you are!! Whoomp There It Is…

Upside down and inside out
I’m about to show all you folks
What’s it’s all about.

Today at Canoecopia in Madison, WI., Danny Mongo of Werner Paddles was demonstrating… well… I’m not sure actually what he was demonstrating, but I think it was something about paddles. I hope it was about paddles. Either that or he’s making a topical observation on current state of Wisconsin politics…  I’ll just be done now, other than to say you can listen to Danny talk about selecting your perfect paddle on this podcast.

Next Season?

What’s new pussycat? Woah, Woah
What’s new pussycat? Woah, Woah
Pussycat, Pussycat
You’re so thrilling
And I’m so willing
To care for you.

Oh man.. While we here in the great white north try to squeeze in a few more day paddles before the snow flies and the water freezes,  some shops are already contemplating next year’s orders and manufacturers are crossing the ‘t’s on their new kayaks and kit!  It’s just the way of things.  How many days until Christmas?

Just Kid Stuff

I don’t wanna grow old
Bring me all the toys you can find
– sia

So if you are into paddling and you have kids you have or WILL be here. You know the spot. It’s the one where your child has grown out of kid gear and is not ready for adult gear. This is the point where almost nothing made is the right size for them. It’s also the point where their interest in the sport is cemented or lost. There has got to be something wrong with that.

Going home…

werner-goinghome

A lot of us were lucky enough to get to load up our gear and go home last night while the sun was still up.  Others will be spending the next couple days clearing, cleaning and hauling the away the last remnants of Canoecopia 2009.  You know how it goes.  Getting set up for a big event or moving into a new home is always a rocking good time.  Clearing up after the party. . not so much… On the other hand you sometimes run into people like this woman who seems to take joy in whatever the heck she’s doing.  Even carrying a box! Must be a Werner thang

the bump

To install the button cover:
1. Gently work the cover onto the shaft.
2. Apply soapy water to the shaft.
3. Grab the button cover with a small towel and work the cover into position over the button.

For 2009 Werner Paddles has re-designed their Adjustable Ferrule just a bit by making the button a bit more low profile which will make those folks happy who were bothered by that little button bump.  What’s more Werner is also making sure not to overlook all those past paddle customers who surely would suffer “low profile” envy and is offering them a special “button cover” just for the asking.   You can learn more about the new Ferrule design by watching a little video over at the Werner site right here.
