Door County Peninsula 08

This is NOT an expedition.  Well, maybe it is. . but just a really short one!  In fact next summer I don’t have plans to cross any oceans. Not yet anyway.  With a larger trip in the works for 2009, I want to just stay right around home in 08.  However in staying with the theme of making your own adventures close to home,, I do have a small 2008 trip in mind. A circumnavigation of the Door County Peninsula.  The peninsula reaches out like a long boney finger into lake Michigan and is cut by a channel making a circumnavigation possible.  This trip should only take about 7 days and at a relaxed pace at that. My goal is to leave Rowley’s Bay on July 3rd, then land back in the Bay by the 10th just in time for the annual Door County Sea Kayak Symposium that begins on the 11th.  Total miles will be around 130 depending on whether I stick to the coast or visit some of the islands dotting the coast along the way.

Door County, Wisconsin is a truly beautiful area known for its Cherry Orchards and wealthy summer retreats. It’s many bays are a play ground for sailboats, jet skis and power boats. The Door Peninsula also offers some of the most beautiful coastlines in the region.  White limestone cliffs, High sand dunes, and dark pine forests are just some of the sights along the way.  Of course as with any Great Lakes trip, you have to respect the enviroment and plan as you would for any open water  adventure.

As of this moment I plan to do the trip solo, however that could change if I can coheres one of my friends to do it with me.  Stay tuned. . I’ll post more info about the Door trip as we get closer.
